# What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

Updated 2026-08-19. Category: GEO & SEO.

SEO optimizes for position in a ranked list of links a person clicks. GEO optimizes for being the source a model quotes inside a generated answer, where there may be no click at all. They share the same foundations and diverge on format: GEO rewards short, self-contained, heavily corroborated answers.

## What is the same

Crawlability, page speed, clear information architecture, internal linking, and genuine authority matter in both. There is no version of GEO that works on a site a crawler cannot read. Sites already doing SEO properly are most of the way there.

## What is different

The unit of success changes. In SEO the unit is a URL that ranks. In GEO the unit is a paragraph that gets quoted, and the URL it came from may never be visited.

The optimal content shape changes with it. SEO tolerated and sometimes rewarded long preamble. GEO punishes it, a model reading a page for an answer will take the cleanest self-contained statement, so anything before that statement is dead weight.

Measurement changes completely. There is no rank tracker. You run a fixed prompt set on a schedule and track whether you get named, in what position, and with what framing.

## How to run both

Build one site that satisfies both. Answer-first pages still rank well in classic search, because putting the answer at the top is also what a human wants. The genuinely GEO-specific additions are a consistent entity graph, complete structured data, an llms.txt, and deliberate off-site corroboration.

## Related questions

**Should I stop doing SEO?**

No. Classic search still drives the majority of trackable traffic for most businesses, and its fundamentals are the base layer GEO is built on.

**Does GEO traffic show in Google Analytics?**

Partially, and unreliably. Referral data from assistants is inconsistent, and answers that produce no click leave no trace at all, which is why prompt-set testing exists as a measurement method.
