What is a creative technologist?

Short answer

A creative technologist is someone who both invents the idea and builds it. Instead of a creative team handing a concept to a development team, one person holds both, which means ideas are shaped by what is actually buildable and builds are shaped by what is actually worth making.

Why the role exists

The traditional split produces two predictable failures. Creative teams pitch things that cannot be built in the timeline, and development teams build things exactly as specified, including the parts that stopped making sense in week two.

Collapsing the roles removes the translation layer. The prototype is the pitch. The thing you approve is the thing that exists.

When you need one

When the deliverable is an experience rather than a page. Release moments, playable builds, installations, anything where the idea only becomes evaluable once you can touch it. If you can judge the work from a static mockup, you do not need a creative technologist, you need a designer and a developer.
