GEO Consultant vs Traditional SEO Agency
Most SEO agencies now claim GEO. A short diagnostic tells you whether the claim is real: ask what their AI visibility baseline looked like and how they measured it. If the answer involves keyword rankings, it is a rebrand.
Short answer
A traditional SEO agency optimizes for rankings and organic clicks, reporting on keyword positions and sessions. A GEO consultant optimizes for being cited inside AI-generated answers, reporting on mentions across a fixed prompt set. The foundations overlap heavily; the content shape, the entity work, and the measurement do not.
Side by side
| Dimension | GEO consultant | Traditional SEO agency |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Being quoted in generated answers. | Ranking position for target keywords. |
| Content shape | Question pages with self-contained answers up top. | Long-form articles built around keyword coverage. |
| Entity work | Central. One consistent identity everywhere, on and off site. | Often minimal or absent. |
| Structured data | A connected graph across Person, Organization, Service, FAQ. | Usually a few isolated blocks, if any. |
| Off-site work | Corroboration on sources models read. | Backlinks for authority transfer. |
| Measurement | Prompt-set testing and share of model. | Rank tracking and organic sessions. |
| Time to signal | Weeks. | Months on competitive terms. |
The verdict
You need both, and they are not equally scarce. Classic SEO fundamentals are widely available and largely commoditised. Entity discipline and answer architecture are not.
If your agency already produces good technical SEO and long-form content, fixing the entity and rewriting the top twenty pages to answer first will return more than any new content.
Frequently asked
Can one agency do both SEO and GEO?+
Yes, and the good ones do. Ask specifically how they measure AI visibility. Prompt-set testing means it is real; a keyword report means it is not.
Is GEO worth it for a small business?+
Often more so than for a large one, because the entity work is faster to complete and small businesses compete on specific questions where a clear answer beats a big brand's vague page.
