Web Audio API

Definition

The Web Audio API is a browser interface for generating, processing, and scheduling audio with sample-accurate timing. It is what allows a browser-based instrument to feel responsive rather than laggy, because scheduling happens off the main thread.

It is the difference between an instrument and a website that plays sounds. Playing audio through an HTML element inherits main-thread timing, which produces the loose, slightly-late feel that makes browser instruments feel broken.
