Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)
Definition
Generative engine optimization is the practice of making content that AI assistants select and quote when generating answers. Unlike search engine optimization, which competes for a position in a list of links, GEO competes for inclusion in a synthesized response that may never produce a click.
The discipline emerged as chat assistants became a primary research interface. The mechanics differ from classic search in three ways: the winning unit is a paragraph rather than a page, corroboration across independent sources matters more than backlink volume, and measurement is done by running fixed prompt sets rather than tracking rank.
